Every now and again, one of our neighbours in this world steps out on a limb to help and protect their fellow man. These modern day heroes deserve our recognition and acclaim. So, I will list some of the recipients of the 2011 bravery awards.
The New Zealand Bravery star and honorary bravery awards were given to the incredible men and women who risked their lives to protect us when Jan Molenaar from Chaucer Road, Napier, attacked on 7 May 2009. They are : Constable Burne, Mr Leonard Holmwood, Senior Constable Hurworth, Detective Sergeant Timothy Smith, Senior Constable Symonds, Sergeant Heath Jones, Senior Sergeant Anthony Miller, Constable Kevin Rooney, Detective Paul Buckley, Senior Constable Bradley Clark, Detective Sergeant Nicholas Clere, Donald Garry Fraser, Ms Christine Jackman and Advanced Paramedic Stephen Smith.
Other recipients of the bravery awards are Austin Bernard Hemmings (Posthumous), Anthony Millsom, Constable James Muir, Senior Firefighter Mervyn Neil, Inspector Michael O'Leary, Mr Peter Booth, Mr James Christie, Constable Nicolas Corley, Mr Grant Exeter, Mr Peter Hanne, Mr Conor O'Leary, Chief Petty Officer Combat System Specialist Mark Taylor and Maurice and Sophie Conti.
Anthony McClean (Posthumous), Anthony Walter Mulder (Posthumous), were awarded for their incredible bravery during a tragic event on 15 April 2008 when a group of students from Elim Christian College were swept away while on a river canyoning expedition in the Mangatepopo Gorge. The principal of the college Roger Burton was given the Order of Merit for his outstanding actions following the event.
